On 7th October 2019, Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) held a forum dedicated to “Information and Digital Literacy Day”. The goal of the forum was to support both the development of digital literacy amongst the population, as well as the creation of a stronger information society.

During the event, participants met with leading experts from Russia, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, as well as with representatives from global research centres working with electronic databases such as Elsevier, EBSCO, ProQuest and many others. Moreover, Learning Resource Centre (LRC) organized 2 webinars with specialists in Information Literacy from the UK and US. During a webinar with specialists from DePaul University (USA) and City University of London (UK) participants were discussed up-to-date information on the development of information and digital literacy, opportunities to develop critical thinking, as well as new ways to use library databases and electronic resources to support lifelong learning. It is hoped that participants will apply the knowledge and skills gained from the webinar to their own research.

This is the first time the event has been held at the university and is linked to the recent introduction into the curriculum, at the initiative of the Training and Resource Centre, of a new course “Information and Digital Literacy”. The course’s key aim is to train students to acquire basic knowledge in the field of information, learn to question the validity information and its source, and develop their own point of view.
